About the project
The Hangleton and Knoll project started out life as the Hangleton project which was developed in the early 80's following the employment of a council funded community development worker based in the only community facility in Hangleton at the time, St Helens church hall.
Over time as the project enjoyed more and more success in creating community groups and putting on public events the project expanded into the Knoll area offering community development and youth work in both. Over time the project has become larger, with more staff in both community development and youth work but also now in IT training and provision, sports workers and youth inclusion workers. due to this the Project has consistently been responsible for the delivery of key public project such as regeneration in the early to mid to late 90's and more recently the Neighborhood Renewal.

Community Development
The Community Development Team work in the areas to help local people develop groups to run activities, start forums, carry out research in the community and look at identifying training and support that the local people and local community and voluntary Groups need to ensure they are well run. The project has a dedicated Community Development worker in each area of Hangleton, Knoll areas who work in the community based in a prominent local building.
Community Development is the core of the project on which everything else is built and the Hangleton & Knoll Project has a long history of and great deal of experience of working in multiple areas of the city providing community development.

Community Development in Hangleton & Knoll has been strong over the past few years with a dramatic increase in groups, many of which were and continue to be supported through the community development worker.
they have an important role in the HCA and the centre by helping to arrange activities for local people and also providing support to the HCA management committee, advising them on good practice and also in recruiting and training trustees.

The community development worker is also helpful if you are looking to do some volunteering as they are in touch with most of the community groups in the area and are also usually behind a lot of the events. So if you would like to get involved in any groups get in contact to find out what people need. Alternatively if you have some skills that you think would be useful to one of the groups then go to the contacts page and leave a message for the centre manager who can forward the information.

The Community Development worker for Hangleton is Beth Harrison, you can call her on 01273 821 380 E-mail her on: beth.harrison@ntlworld.com or alternatively write to her at Hangleton Community Centre, Harms worth Crescent, Hove, BN3 8BW

Youth Work
The Hangleton & Knoll Youth Work Team is a much valued part of both communities and have become an integral part of life in Hangleton & Knoll, working with disadvantaged young people. They use a number of different methodologies in delivering youth work, acting in partnership with other agencies such as 'The Substance Misuse Services' and most recently the 'Youth Inclusion support Project', ensuring that young people have increased access the help they need easily and confidentially.
Primarily the Youth Workers carry out 'street work' walking round in pairs and meeting and talking to young people on the streets about issues from school and general interest to more serious and personal problems such as home, school and sexual health.
Having made contact with young people they are able to develop these relationships during group and project work, focusing on specific issues and also through one to one work be able to offer more intensive and focused support.
The Youth Workers also support young people in projects that lead to diversionary activities such as the young women's group 'Unique' which recently completed a sexual health project which involved them scripting and acting in a video about sex, drugs and alcohol and then showing this at a presentation evening.

Through support from 'The Neighborhood Renewal Fund' the Youth Workers helped to develop the young peoples resource room which the young people painted, chose the furniture and also what information they wanted available in the room as well as a set of rules for use of the room.
The youth work team have helped thousands of young people in Hangleton & Knoll and will hopefully continue to in the future.

Neighborhood Renewal

The Hangleton & Knoll Project have been the main body responsible for the development of the Neighborhood renewal programmer within the Hangleton, Knoll Laburnm and Moyne area. This involves the project being responsible for the surveying and consultation process and in carrying out the plan and actions that srise from the projects which are developed according to the identified need.

The project then worked with designers to put together the actual plan (which you can download here). The basic results of the plan meant that the focus for Neighborhood renewal for Hangleton were to focus on Anti-social behavior and activities, Housing and the environment and finally public transport.

In order to achieve progress in these areas the project set up the Hangleton & Knoll Community Action Team to work towards resolving these issues by working with local service providers to find solutions and to be able to gather information.

The project also work with Neighborhood renewal in setting up projects to help tackle issues raised in the Neighborhood Action Plans, which has helped strengthen community and youth work in the area.
